Courmayeur - Not Just a Winter Destination

You may think that transfers from Geneva to Courmayeur are always full of people carrying skis or other forms of winter equipment. You'd be wrong! The mountains are also very popular in summer.
Where is Courmayeur?
In spite of the sound of its name, this resort town is actually in Italy on of the Italian side of Mont Blanc. It is a popular and quite sophisticated ski resort during the winter season and is extremely well known as a centre for all winter sports activities. Although there are several ways to get there, one common route is by air to Geneva with a subsequent Geneva to Courmayeur transfer. The major town in this part of Italy is Aosta and, as you might imagine, there is stunning scenery just about everywhere.
Summer activities
It sometimes surprises people to hear that the mountains don't just close down as a holiday destination once at the snow goes away and the temperature starts to rise.
What happens is, they simply open up to an entirely different range of leisure activities and attract a different clientele.
Perhaps the most obvious example is hiking. Yes, of course, these mountains are the sort of thing associated with professional climbers and those 'fingertips' dramatic sequences in many a Hollywood film; yet they are also about rather more pragmatic walking, involving a good sturdy pair of boots and a set of reasonable, although by no means superhuman, leg muscles. In and around the region are numerous paths and hiking trails that are suitable for just about all fitness levels.
If you are really fit and enjoy pushing yourself, you can also hire various forms of off-road bike and get up into some of the most stunning scenery that you can see on two wheels. Just keep in mind that a bike trail that starts off in a nice easy gentle decline may actually result in you needing to cycle back up it!
In fact, there is a vast range of such activities in the area and far too many to list here in detail. Swimming, nature watching, fishing, pony trekking and umpteen other pastimes will all be available either on your doorstep or within a very short travelling distance.
The weather
If you are travelling from Geneva to Courmayeur for the first time outside the winter season, you may be wondering what the weather will hold for you upon your arrival.
In practice, the weather during the late spring, summer and early autumn months is generally good with plenty of sun during the middle part of that period. Just keep in mind that the days may be very hot but the nights might still be chilly enough for woollies or fleeces if you are staying at altitude. Bottom line - if you are travelling from Geneva to Courmayeur in the summer, don't worry. The chances are you'll have pretty good weather on the whole once you get there.
